Neighbor Gift

My mom came up with this cute neighbor/friend gift I thought I would share. She found these cute Christmas themed scissors at Wal-mart, added some tape and a bow with a tag reading, "Cut out the unimportant things...and stick to the true meaning of Christmas!" I of course copied her, made a tag with the phrase and packaged them up. They have yet to be delivered, but I'm half-way done.....

Festival of Trees

Last weekend we went for the first time to the Festival of Trees. Tyler and I were both amazed at the magnitude of the display and the generosity of organizers and donors. It was a humbling experience going from tree to tree, as many were donated in remembrance of a deceased loved one, including many children. My heart was full of many emotions as I wandered through the exhibit. Tears stung my eyes as I read about some of the sweet stories different trees represented. I left feeling an immense amount of gratitude and love - the perfect combination for this holiday season.

We had fun trying different hats on Ryker Boy. He wasn't too picky.
We settled on the red hat and then made a quick stop to visit Santa. Ryker wasn't afraid of the Jolly man, but he wasn't about to smile either!
Random photo of me that night...
Ryker is all ready for the cold weather in his snow suit!

New Family Photos

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, we had our photos taken by Tami (Tyler's brother's wife). She has just started her own photography business, Young Photography, and was gracious enough to take our little family's photos. We are so excited with the results!
Thank you so much, Tami! We love them!

Ho, Ho, Ho!

I picked up this Santa suit last January on clearance. I should have purchased the next size because this one is just a wee-too small. But I did squeeze him into it for a few photos. Unfortunately, because we rarely set him on the carpet without a blanket down, he was more interested in playing with the carpet. You'll notice the distraction in the display of photos below, which was also the reason for his lack of interest in smiling for the camera.
Oops! Santa got a little tipsy and then he was really done....poor boy. His crazy momma just won't stop snapping photos.

Gratitude ABC's

I would be remiss if I didn't jot down some thoughts on gratitude. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos to document our Thanksgiving or Black Friday activities. But we had a busy and enjoyable weekend. We are truly blessed and it is hard to articulate all that I am thankful for, however I thought this little ABC idea would suffice.

A - Armed forces: Although I am not a proponent of war, I am very grateful for our country's military. These service men and women sacrifice so much for the freedoms we enjoy.

B - Books: I love to read. I'm grateful for the places I explore and things I learn while reading a good book. Reading is one of my favorite indulgences and I'm obsessed with books on tape for my daily commute to work.

C - Child: Oh, how I love him! D - Diet Coke: Need I say more?

E - Education: An education is empowering. I'm so glad to have been afforded the opportunity to go to college and get a degree. I'm also grateful for Tyler's education (although an expensive one - it was worth every dime!).

F - Friends: I feel very lucky to have the friends that I do. What more can I say, but "thank you"!

G - Geology: Utah is a beautifully diverse state. From the mountainous region to red rocks and desert - it has everything but the ocean!

H - Health: I've been very blessed to have good health and I don't want to take that for granted.

I - Independence: My parents strongly encouraged independence and self reliance. I'm thankful for those lessons that continue to benefit me today.

J - Jokes: I'm grateful for what good humor, giggling and laughing do to lift my spirits.

K - Kindness: Of all the virtues I want my children to exemplify, kindness is the most important to me. In my own experience, those that have shown kindness to me have impacted my life the very most.

L - Life: I watched the movie, My Sister's Keeper, over the weekend. It was heart wrenching. But it did give me the opportunity to reflect on the frailty of life and remind me to be a better person as I go throughout my day.

M - Motherhood: A new, crazy, exhausting, wonderfully rewarding journey.

N - Neighborhood: We were determined to find a home in Daybreak, because we love the neighborhood. We have made great friends and we enjoy the family friendly atmosphere, making it an ideal place to raise our children.

O - Orthodontia: Although a long and somewhat painful 2+ year experience, I'm thankful for my teeth.

P - Pam: Ryker's nanny. My heart is overflowing with gratitude for her consistent and loving care.

Q - Quiet: I'm not a fan of loud noise. I prefer my home to be relatively quiet where we can find respite and serenity from the ho-hum of daily life.

R - Religion: I'm grateful for the peace and perspective my religion lends me, in all aspects of life.
S - Sister: Hailey and I are five years apart in age. Growing up we weren't close friends, mainly due to our age difference. Now, I find her to be one of my dearest friends. She is the shining star in our family, full of life and energy.

T - Tyler: My best friend. My confidant. My encourager. My supporter. My sweetheart.

U - Unconditional love: My family is an awesome example of unconditional love. I have an immense amount of gratitude to have the family I do.

V - Vacations: Whether a stay-cay or somewhere far away, I'm grateful for the sense of rejuvenation a good vacation provides.

W - Work: I'm thankful for my job and the sense of accomplishment it gives me. I'm also grateful for Tyler's job. His work is by far more emotionally draining, however his is a job of service, helping others improve their life for the better.

X - XOXO: I'm not an overly touchy, feely person. But I do love hugging and kissing my little one. He has the best, most squishy cheeks ever!

Y - You: Thank you for all your encouraging comments, thoughtful advice and compliments. Blogging has brought me back in touch with so many of whom I had otherwise lost touch. I sincerely appreciate your friendship!

Z - ZZZZZ's: I am a good sleeper. I really need a solid night's rest. My baby has changed my sleep regime, so I am even more grateful for sleep than I have ever been.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Here are some recent photos of Ryker's playtime. He is getting so fun! We recently bought this jumper, which he adores. He is getting very good at bouncing. These are shoes from Tyler's baby wardrobe.
Look at me, I can now sit up!

Update....

It seems that November is flying by....I've barely come to terms with the fact that the Christmas season is upon us. Recently I've had family asking what Ryker needs for Christmas. And really, he doesn't need anything! I have clothes stocked up for him until he is six. Not really, but his closet is full and his toy basket is overflowing. Okay, what we can always use is diapers. Our supply is running low :) And quite frankly, his mom has a hard time restraining herself in the baby section at Target (or Kohls, or Walmart, or Macy's etc.).

As way of an update for the month, we'll compile a little list:
  • I found my keys! Yay! Found in one of my coat pockets....3 weeks later.....
  • Ryker will now take formula. So when we are in a pinch, we have a quick back-up!
  • I had my first cavity filled last week. What an unpleasant process! I have a lot more empathy for my hubby and his distaste for dental appointments. I have always loved to go to the dentist, because of how clean my teeth felt afterwards. But now knowing the alternate outcome, it isn't such a rewarding experience.
  • Ryker is back on his sleep schedule. After a one-month hiatus, he is again sleeping through the night. Go Ryker!
  • I had a "me" day last Saturday. It was delightful. I went to Life by Aveda, a spa and salon near our home. I got my hair cut (just below my shoulders) and a massage. One of the best massages I've ever had.
  • Tyler put up the Christmas lights on the house and this weekend we'll be decorating the interior.
  • And for the grand finale, I came home from work on Monday (Tyler's day off) and found my very large mound of clothes waiting to be ironed, all pressed and hung. Since the season changed, I've had a pile of summer clothes that have set in our laundry room awaiting my attention. This included seven pair of capris, seven shirts, one skirt and two pair of pants. That is embarrassing to admit, but now the ironing basket is empty! I couldn't be more grateful to Tyler, as I really hate ironing!

Wishing you all a fabulous Thanksgiving filled with family, friends and good food. And my favorite tradition of the weekend is the Black Friday shopping. I'm thinking I'll be at Kohl's at 4 a.m. See you there!

The Latest....

We have been busy with various activities, mostly revolving around the newest member of our family. He adds a new layer of complicated to our lives. No longer can we jump in the car on a quick errand or zip into the grocery store. I now haul around a 40 pound diaper bag - which to be honest carries a lot more than just diapers.

And since I became pregnant, my brain is not what it used to be. I'm not a loser (meaning, I typically don't lose things). In fact I can honestly say, I have never lost my keys. Until last week. I don't know where they are. Luckily I have a spare set that is getting me by, but I keep racking my brain as to where they might be. And I am certain, they are not in the 40 pound diaper bag. I have looked.....multiple times. Then over the weekend, I lost my watch. I have no idea where I would have taken it off.

Tyler took this photo, while trying to placate the child and do laundry. It seems to have worked:
Don't get me wrong, I love these new changes onset by motherhood. Some days, I do think back of when life was just a little less complicated. And I didn't lose my keys....But then I look at photos like these, think of Ryker's sweet baby smell and my heart melts. It is okay that my keys are lost, because that means I'm thinking about and caring for my number one. Who has yet to roll over unassisted:
Who laughs hardest at his Daddy's funny faces:
Who does not like rice cereal: But loved his very first pumpkin:
And made a very cute pumpkin himself:
You make complicated worth it, my baby! I love you to the moon!

Five Months Old....

Here is our little munchkin at five months old. He is getting so big! We are constantly laughing at the funny things he does. Such a joy he is to our family!
BTW: This is a nine month outfit ~ Crazy, crazy, crazy how fast he is growing!

On another note... you will notice in the photo above, Ryker is trying to fit his whole fist in his mouth. In general, it is very common for babies to suck on their fingers, is it not? Then why do people have the instinctual inclination to touch a baby's hand? I don't mind if your hands are clean (meaning you just washed them and have not touched anything en route to touching the child) - but please do not touch my baby's hands when we are at Wal-mart AND you are a complete stranger! Also, I'm not going to let you hold my baby if I don't know you....especially in the middle of Wal-mart.

Needless to say, I've become a bit of a Momma Bear. Don't act shocked or offended when I ask/tell you rather firmly, "please do not touch his hands because he sucks on them". Or if I straight up tell you "no" when you ask to hold him. There is nothing against you, I'm just trying to protect my son from germs. Namely, the H1N1 virus. Because if he gets sick, it is me that will be caring for him, not you.

You might be fluphobic if ...

With the H1N1 pandemic upon us, I thought this article in the Chicago Tribune was very appropriate. Made me laugh, because many of these behaviors describe me perfectly - and most were taught to me by my mother....

You might be fluphobic if ...
By Mary Schmich
Published: Monday, Oct. 26, 2009 12:45 p.m. MDT

(MCT) — The moment it became clear that I was on the verge of a full-blown case of the disease, I was gazing at an ATM keypad.

Was it the relentless media coverage of H1N1? Was it those TV commercials that make germs look like hairy rodents?

Whatever the provocation, with my fingers poised over the money machine, I had a thought: Maybe I should enter my PIN with my elbow.

In that instant, I realized I was coming down with something more widespread than the flu — fluphobia.

Fluphobia is sweeping the nation and inspiring innovative germ-fighting strategies. It has turned the elbow into the most versatile body part since the thumb, though in the case of the ATM, I settled for a knuckle.

The fluphobic person is aware of germ-fighting basics: Wash your hands frequently and well. Cover your sneeze and cough, preferably with your arm, not your hand. Keep your hands away from your face.

But that's not enough for the fluphobe. He or she is an inventor, a contortionist, cleverly deploying the knuckle, the knee, the foot, the hip and the elbow in ways that would impress Cirque du Soleil.

"I always use a sleeve or bottom of a shirt to open restroom doors, ALWAYS foot flush," reported Cheryl Tolcher when I quizzed people on Facebook about their fluphobic practices.

"Push doors are pushed with elbows, side or hip. I sneeze down my shirt."

The line is fine between fluphobia and intelligent caution. The above practices could be signs of either one. So could the following:

You steer the grocery cart with your forearms, not your hands.

You carry your own pen to sign credit card receipts.

You push through revolving doors with an elbow, a forearm or a fist covered in a sleeve you've learned to grasp from the inside.

You press elevator buttons with an elbow, a knuckle or a pen tip.

You open the "L" door with your elbow and grip the bus strap only if you're wearing gloves.

You stock up on Clorox wipes and use them on your roommates' or work-mates' stuff, too, whether or not they want it.

"I now carry waterless liquid cleaner in my purse," wrote Annette Wehrli, "and I have been wiping down everything from doorknobs to car handles to drawer pulls much more often."

A couple of fluphobes in my Facebook survey reported holding their breath. "I hold my breath when someone sneezes in the elevator and get off at the next stop even if it's not mine!" wrote one.

If hand sanitizer is a fluphobe's best friend, paper towels are a close second, especially when exiting a public bathroom.

"Although by using those you identify yourself as crazy," wrote a Facebook friend.

I recently saw a guy at the gym wrap paper towels around the free weights. Napkins also do extra germ-fighting duty.

"At a reception, brunch or other gathering where there's a salad bar or buffet," wrote Beverly Loder, "I keep a napkin in my hand to pick up the serving utensils."

Some fluphobic strategies invite argument. Foot flushing? Isn't that rude to the people who flush with their hands? Holding your breath? The bigger worry is the germs that land on you.

I believe in a cautious though not fearful approach to germs. And yet sometimes bad germs happen to people with the best of knuckles, elbows and intentions. I have the cold to prove it.

Today I Feel...

Tired: Ryker was up at midnight and 4 a.m. Tyler got up both times - yes he is that good of a Daddy AND he hates to hear the little babe cry.

Grateful: For my sweet, chubby, night owl baby. Even when I am up to comfort him in the middle of the night, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for my son. What a blessing he is to our family.

Loved: Tyler continually reminds me how much he adores me. I don't know why, but he does. Last week he told me I should go get a massage, knowing how much I love that little indulgence. I have yet to take him up on this offer!

Frustrated: Our computer is at the doctor AGAIN! It has been there three times in the last month. First for a virus, second to have the ethernet card installed, third because the hard drive is no longer working. We're unsure if the latter is attributed to the virus....I'm pretty sure we have now paid the equivalent to the value of the computer in repairs.

Excited: For Halloween. I love to answer the door-bell and see the little munchkins in their costumes. We decided that next year we need to dress-up. We haven't since we were in college six years ago.....and we had a blast. Party at my house next year!

Grumpy: It is snowing....need I say more?

Anxious: I found furniture for my front room that has been empty since we moved in. Now I just have to convince Tyler that the time is right to go buy it. I told Tyler this is all I want for Christmas....

Emotionally Drained: I'm reading the book, Escape, by Carolyn Jessop. It is an autobiography depicting her life while living in the FLDS polygamous community under Warren Jeffs in Colorado City. The book is captivating and unbelievable, but it is wearing me down. I am so flabbergasted by the oppression and abuse that she details hidden behind the curtain of the FLDS religion. As I read, I have experienced anger, disappointment, fear, sorrow, fortitude, etc. I can't wait to finish this book!

Late Night...

Recently Tyler has been working a night or two a week doing court ordered therapy with domestic violence offenders. That coupled with church obligations and the baby, our time together as just the two of us has been very limited lately. To my surprise, last night after work (around 8:30 p.m.) Tyler arrived home with some of this:

a RedBox rental of this:and declared it a "late night". I love it when he surprises me with little things. We cozied up on the couch and had some good laughs. And although I fell asleep (as I usually do), it was still a treat! Thank you for thinking of me, sweetie!

Ryker's Four Month Stats

Tyler took baby Ryker to the doctor this week for his four month well-child check. Ryker continues to grow....He is going through clothes like crazy, some outfits only worn a couple of times. He is currently wearing 6-9 month outfits and 12 month onesies. I've given up on trying to shop for future seasons because I have no idea what size he will be. I have a couple of Christmas outfits that certainly won't fit come Christmas. I guess we'll have to save them for his future brother or sister to wear oneday. Here are his four month stats:
15 lbs. 13 oz. (68th percentile)
26 inches (85th percentile)

We sure do love our little man! Poor little guy had to get more shots, but with some Tylenol and a long nap he was pretty happy that evening.

On another note, he has been struggling this past week with sleeping through the night. For the past two and a half months, Ryker has slept from 8:30 p.m. until 6 or 7 a.m. However, for the last week he has only done that once. The other nights he is getting up 2, 3, and last night 4 times blazing mad. I offer to feed him and sometimes he accepts, sometimes he screams louder. After last night, I'm at my wits end. Tyler and I take turns trying to console him and get him back to sleep, but it is still hard waking up and going to work in the morning. The doctor told Tyler that we have just been lucky to have him sleeping through the night this young and that maybe he is going through a growth spurt. She didn't offer any advise. Is this normal for a baby's sleep routine to randomly get disturbed for no apparent reason? It would be one thing if he was waking up once, but four times!!??!! It is like we are back to the days when we first brought him home from the hospital. Any advice out there?

Monday Funny...

I thought this funny is very applicable to my life right now.....

Happy Halloween!

The many faces of Ryker:
And we're done.......

These were outtakes for our Halloween Greetings sent out to the Grandparents.....As you can see it takes quite the photo shoot to get a good shot :) Here is the final:
